Sync is fucking fantastic, just how I remember. I don’t mind at all paying for a great app by a talented dev.
The pro version is supposed to be out later, and will just be a one-time payment unlike ultra’s subscription
The lifetime purchase to remove ads is up. It’s a bit pricey but I can understand why, Lemmy has a smaller userbase. Totally worth it.
I wonder if it was because of the backlash from being subscription only? I was surprised by how many angry posts there were. I gotta admit even I was disappointed. I don’t mind paying for a pro version. But a subscriptions a bit of an ask, as I don’t need the features offered by it, but I do like sync and Lawrence is a good guy.

They are talking about the remove ads option. It’s a one time purchase just to remove ads with none of the additional features of the subscription. As I understand it.

Its not about the money but about the software freedom and source transparency
I say this as someone who is probably one of the biggest supporters of software-freedom around here, but bullying or shaming people for preferring non-free apps does nothing but incite resentment towards the movement. I value the four freedoms because I think I deserve control of my computing, not because I think it’s my place to dictate what others should value.
The community is one of the worst aspects when working with/on opensource software.

Combine that with all those people who don’t understand the difference between software developed by people who donate their spare time to work on FOSS software and for-profit software developed by big corporations. As a FOSS dev you get so many entitled assholes who think downloading a free app gives them the right to threaten/abuse the devs.
And then there are the fanboys who attack everyone who talks about downsides of their favourite product.
All in all, the hostile community makes FOSS development very not fun.

I voiced my opinion on one of the sync announcement posts and it was received quite controversially.
We all get stuck in our own camps and become quote tribal and I feel like all around it’s difficult to not take what is being said as some kind of attack.
Yeah. How about just everybody uses what they fucking want and leave each other alone? You know, like it should be in real life. That would be nice.

I don’t get why instead of making posts about “Don’t use Sync!” no one is saying “Feel free to use and pay for whatever you like! But as a friendly reminder please note that you should also consider helping your instance owners or the core Lemmy team as well.”
There’s nothing wrong at all with paying for software, and even some will be fine with ads. It has literally nothing to do with anyone else but that person. Let them do them.
Like I say though, I think the thing that should be being said is that the app is not self contained and that these people should seriously consider helping out the other aspects as well if they can. But hey, no, let’s just belittle them and push them away instead of welcoming them. I can almost guarantee that the availability of Sync will bring more users to Lemmy that never would have been here otherwise.
I don’t understand the bitching about it, we users were asking for this, it is the good thing about Lemmy/Fediverse, you have tons of options, and probably will have more, heck even the PWA are awesome, no need to download anything at all.

Sync is a perfectly fine app for me. I tried all other apps and nowhere near to sync. I don’t even have ads on the free version as I am using dns ad blocker. The moment one time payment for removing ads is out(it is coming), I will buy it. Or I will donate to dev in some other way as I am not a fan of subscriptions.
I do not have ads either…but no idea why I do not have an ad blocker, they just appear.empty for some reason.
Yeah they are empty on my phone too, and I’ve never used any DNS-adblocking on my home network. I suspect it might be because whatever ad system Sync uses currently just doesn’t have any ads for my country, but I don’t actually know.
It’s the same in the US (for me at least) also, either it’s not working just yet, or it’s just a placeholder for now, you never know with pre-release apps.

I couldn’t even see if the read posts were dimmed.
It does in TestFlight. In fact, it has several options for marking read and works great.

I just installed Sync after browsing with Jerboa for the past month. Sync has such a clean, smooth look that if it functions even remotely consistently it’ll be my new replacement.

I used sync for reddit for years, I had no ads in the free version and the pro version. I’ve tried a half dozen apps for Lemmy since my Reddexit. Sync for Lemmy is far and away the best. I really missed its design. I was happy to toss $20 to you for no ads on Sync for Lemmy. Thanks for all the hard work.

Picked up Jerboa when I made the switch to Lemmy. Now I won’t be returning to Sync. No way in hell I’m paying a subscription.
As a Jerboa user who just started using Sync, I can honestly say it’s really fucking slick. Like really slick.
I’m sure it is, but until the live version has single payment, I won’t consider the switch. Even then, I don’t use Lemmy half as much as I used Reddit, so I won’t pay the same amount I paid for Reddit.
I am looking forward to the lifetime payment, yeah. Is Sync made by a single dev? I don’t know anything about this app aside from everyone clamoring for the team to make a Lemmy-compatible version.
I also find myself using Lemmy less than Reddit but I’m hoping as we discover and tailor our feeds with more fitting communities then it’ll naturally become a healthy replacement. It took me like 10 years to curate my reddit algorithm.

It does have single payment. You can pay once to remove the ads. The subscription is for a bunch of bonus features.
He’s said there’s plans for a lifetime option in the future. So just be the same as having Sync Pro.
Sync already feels far more polished than jerboa or connect in my opinion.

Yeah, tried sync since that was my reddit app of choice but the ads and tracking just forced me to uninstall it. Trying thunder now and it seems pretty good
