  • What a useless read:

    • No path to a workers party proposed.
    • No acknowledgement of DSA’s existing resolution to build a workers party.
    • And most importantly, no criticism of the DSA’s actual strategy, which it sorely needs.

For those unaware: DSA resolved to form a workers party via a dirty break with the Democratic party by building our own independent campaign infrastructure (no ActBlue, no NGPVan) and running our own candidates on that infrastructure as “Tribune’s of the Plebs”. Once the infrastructure is proven stable enough, and there is a large enough caucus of DSA members in office, we break.

Now obviously a lot of problems with that strategy and how DSA is executing it. The most glaring is that many of the candidates we’re running aren’t actually on board with this strategy. But that’s where the criticism should start. Not in complete ignorance of the existing efforts.

  • You’re being delusional if you think the Gemini protocol is any sort of socialist praxis. Even the author of the article acknowledges that its a bit of an ivory tower and embraces its elitism.

Gemini’s designers planned for it to be of interest to academics and enthusiasts, and completely incapable of commercial exploitation. We – academics and enthusiasts – made the web.

I welcome a place where academics and continue their discussions with some isolation from capitalism but Gemini will never be a protocol of the proletariat and therefore will have limited adoption.

  • It’s no sillier than any other false flag attack

Do we know he shot real bullets, anyway?

Yes, because a racist firefighter standing behind Trump caught one of the strays and died.

Please just internalize that the US has many psychos with guns. This guy was in his early 20s and worked at a retirement home. If you don’t know the significance of that, ask before arguing further. He googled both Biden’s and Trump’s campaign rally stops and Trumps was closest. Crooks would’ve shot up his old elementary school but decided he wanted to be better. It all adds up.

Eurohicks will only see a well aimed photo out of hundreds and think “that’s too good to be true - it must’ve been staged”. There’s USA flags all over any Trump rally as well as photographers. The idea that one would get a line on the other while Trump musters some chincey WWE pose in between is easy to conceive.

If you’re familiar with the trends in america you’ll understand it as a natural consequence and one to expect in the future.

  • Because you’ve chosen the river >=0.4 any advice will depend completely on the window manager you choose. Things like keybindings and decorations are punted are punted to the window manager with that release. If you want to write your own then you’ll have to implement all that yourself. Look at the source code for existing river window managers.

We’re still in gtk territory, right?

Lol no. Even with river-classic you’re several layers below individual GUI toolkits. If you want to stay in gtk land then you must only choose widgets/apps that only use GTK. Your toolbar could be GTK, and your launcher could be QT if you want. It could also eschew all that and use pango-cairo if it wants.

    For the general flow:

    1. Display manager starts river
    2. River executes ~/.config/river/init and you’re on your own.
    3. The init file should start your window manager.
    4. Your window manager should start communicating with the river server over the protocols that river implements.
    5. In river classic there’s only 2 protocol methods to implement, layout and user command.
    6. In river-classic: everything else, keybindings, hooks, decorations, all get set by executing riverctl commands
    7. In new river: there’s more protocol methods covering all that for the window manager to implement.
