I remember using Iceweasel and other variations back in the day because otherwise they’d be infringing on Mozilla’s trademark. I don’t actually see anything wrong with this. You can still create a 1-1 clone/copy of Firefox and advertise it as such with a different name. But telling others it is Firefox would not be accurate as Mozilla has no control over it and others may introduce changes that negatively reflect on their brand.

I’m not the smartest person in the world and I could smell Don’s Con’s (or was it his shat-in diapers) from miles away. A simple search would have brought up tons of allegations against him prior to any attempts to run for president and allowed you to build a character profile within 10 seconds. Data brokers will now have to navigate this law and enforce it or face fines at significant cost to their business model; your data is worth ~$200 a year and they would be fined that much per day if they don’t comply. And audits are coming to ensure compliance. So yes, it will be a big waste of time, but not for us. It’s data brokers who will need to ensure they’re enforcing the policy or face fines that well exceed the cost of business.

True! But personally I’m okay with not contributing to the next facebook/Zucc or Twitter/Elmo. Long-term it’s in our best interest to build on platforms that serve us, not their creators, even if it takes them 10 years to slowly pull the rug from underneath us.

Blacksky is an option. But the point about the platform not being meaningfully decentralized still stands. Your current options with [*]sky are equivalent to only having the option of using either mastodon.social or mstdn.jp, the two biggest mastodon social platforms.

On the Mastodon side, you have the option of nearly 9k servers to choose from.

There’s a few problems with Bluesky if you’re looking for a platform that won’t eventually turn to shit.

1. The platform is not meaningfully decentralized. With Bluesky directing its future, they have the power to do whatever they want with it, including attempting to monetize and clamp down on access.
2. Because of point 1 above, Bluesky is able to easily censor users.
3. To fix points 1 & 2 above you have to run the full stack: a PDS (~$5/month), relay (~$30/month), and AppView (~$300/month), which is prohibitively expensive for most people.

Hosting your own mastodon instance, which cannot be easily blanket-censored costs ~$5 bucks a month.

If a system is the outcome it produces, Mastodon is a platform for the people, Bluesky a platform for large orgs.

There’s a lot of people posting their own stories about how their flavor “just works”, which is great, but all just anecdotes. The reality is, statistically, anything that changes often is more likely to fail.

I will say, the cool thing about it is the interoperability between ActivityPub platforms. For example, from my mastodon account, since I’m subscribed to some hashtags I’m interested in, I occasionally see posts from Lemmy/Piefed (reddit-like), Pixelfed (Instagram-like), Loops (Tiktok-like), etc. I can comment and like without having to create accounts on the other platforms. It’s definitely more aligned with what the open web should look like, although could use some UX and discoverability improvements, as I’m not entirely sure how some stuff works, but it’s been interesting to try it out.

For anyone who cares, Bluesky is not meaningfully decentralized and can be easily censored.

Mastodon cannot be censored in the same way, thus no long-term enshittification. If you’re going to switch away from Twitter, give Mastodon a try. It uses the same tech/protocol as Lemmy, Piefed, Loops, Pixelfed, m/kbin, etc.

Your response is equivalent to “all lives matter” and says one of two things:

Fair point, and I did already switch my main desktop to Linux. That said, its still a positive signal for valve and others that there IS money to be made in the Linux ecosystem. Granted, likely not much, but we can change that if we put our money where our mouth is (those of us who can).
