ADHD@lemmy.world•Does anyone else get WEIRDLY uncomfortable about watching or partaking in mainstream fandoms/movies/Tv Shows?English
14·2 months agoNot as strongly as you, but yes, I have a strong aversion to popular media. I didnt used to be that way but somewhere in my adulthood that changed (I’m 45 now).
The more people try to sell me on a show, game, movie etc the less I want to interact with it. I still dont have a solid reason for why but there’s a few ideas (for me at least): 1 I don’t like watching stuff WITH people as I feel self conscious that they will be watching me and my reactions. 2 I’m not interested in discussing the things I enjoy with others. I just dont participate in Fandoms. I just want to take in the experiences and enjoy them for what they are. 3 People recommending stuff can take a really pushy turn and it can become a prickly topic if you don’t take their advice (whether you asked for it or not). 4 Fans can zealously hype their media and create expectations that aren’t lived up to in the consumption. Just comes down to we like that we like and it’s not the same for everyone.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Previously awkward teens, how did you eventually figure it out?
16·6 months agoI didn’t. I’m still awkward. But that hasn’t stopped me from living my life.
Pretty busy in my area. I have two radios, one that stays home and one that I bring places. I find it cool that i can see messages from north LA county here in San Diego that are all routed thru a single node someone put out on the coast of Orange County.
Most of the time the chat is just “good morning” etc. During wildfires though I do see local “reporting” of fire progress and first responder presence.
Occasionally people report ICE presence which is kind of cool.
I’m writing a python script to marry up GPS data of m6 bike rides with air quality data from a small air data measurement device. Turns out doing stuff with datetime structures in python is a PITA.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it true that the education system is crap in America?
2·7 months agoBoth my kids are in public schools in an ok California school district. But by ok I mean underfunded but with an active PTA that successfully keeps a lot of the music and arts programs functional. The grade 1 to 8 curriculum here is good, and not filled with ‘wokeness’ like the MAGAs scream about. The high-school curriculum really lacked depth particularly in language arts. My son’s 9th grade english class literally read cliffs notes of books and summaries instead of reading the books themselves. It’s been hit and miss in high-school and really depended on the teacher. Both kids have done very well but I take some credit for that due to their parents consistent involvement and engagement throughout the years.
As for school shootings, at least here, I’m not too worried. Our schools are locked down like prisons during teaching hours. It does weigh on my kids minds though. They’ve talked about their feelings doing “active shooter” drills. It’s just a scary reality for them that I certainly never had to deal with.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unusual way you've made some extra money?
1·10 months agoImported/smuggled and sold packs of Lucky Strike cigarettes at my US high school. I should have charged more, in hindsight.
Ooooh that’s a good spot to die on.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever fallen asleep during a speech?
6·1 year agoYes. During all of them. Sitting still and trying to pay attention to someone talking means sleepy time for me.

Hello newcomer! Dont jnow where you live or what the social mores are around teens and dating but…If you’re good with your son being sexually active then your home is arguably a safer place for that activity than, say, a car or something. Probably a good idea, though, to have a talk about safe sex, consent etc.
If you’re asking for a completely different reason my apologies.

Lol, once had a teacher look over my shoulder at my exam and sit down and try to help me. Then the following lecture have him declare to the class that he was frustrated that “one student” couldn’t even yada yada.
