Ahh, yes. That makes total sense. British Spanglish coders. It was right in front of my face the whole time
Is an init script just a very British version or systemd? As in “it’s systemd, init?”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something that most people normally do that you find weird?
19·4 days agoI’m English the word “sorry” doesn’t mean “I take responsibility for this event or action” it means “I am expressing regret that the event or action has occured,” and normally comes with the condition of responsibility, but it’s really just a way of expressing empathy or regret for the event. “I’m sorry this has happened” is not the same thing as “I am sorry I did this”
Just a quirk of our language. In Spanish*, “I’m sorry” is translated to “lo siento” and literally means something along the lines “I feel” or “I feel this,” an expression of literal empathy for the occurrence. You can also say “perdon” which translates closer to pardon, as in pardon me. I don’t know the cultural context in Spanish speaking countries very well, but that one feels more like accepting responsibility, if one needs to be pardoned.
*I am not a Spanish speaker. Take this with a dose of salt your cardiologist would be quite upset about.

122·6 days agoYup. And as someone on the far left, it’s pretty easy to see that those people who just stand still like the meme are talking about are absolutely not on the far left. I’d also argue if you can stand still in your middling 90s/early 00s centrist politics amidst everything happening, you’re probably a pretty shitty person

Ignoring the obvious conversation about downs, a story:
A friend of mine when we were roughly 20ish had a pregnant dog, and needed to go out of town. Asked me to watch the dog in case she had the puppies. I agreed. She then became very serious about complications in labor, and I told her not to worry, I had the vet’s number, and dog’s generally have an easier time of it than people. She kept going on about making sure she would be alright, and after listening to her for several minutes, it became clear she did not understand what would be happening, and was concerned there was a chance one of the babies would get stuck in the dog’s butt. Because she genuinely thought sometimes babies can come out the butt if they get lost in there.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•It's midnight, time for shitposting
2·9 days agoHonestly, I read about it a bit. I’m not entirely against it. My mom was born 61, and there was a pretty clear difference in her and her age peers than her older sisters, all 10+ years older than her. For instance, she was an avid progressive, as with most of the people her age she associated with, the older siblings (except her gay brother) are all trump supporters. I don’t know per se that that’s generational, exactly. But I could see wanting to distance yourself from certain aspects of boomers

World News@lemmy.world•Pope Leo speaks out against cardinal ordering blessings for gay couplesEnglish
4·12 days agoThis is one of those pieces of info I try to slip in whenever possible. I’m a firm believer that celibacy is bad for the mind, body, and soul when it’s forced on people. Priests may go into it willingly, but years and years of it with no reprieve does bad things to people’s minds. If the church could make one reform that I genuinely believe would be best, it is the celibacy of clergy. Tons of reforms needed, but that one is the one I think needs to happen soonest.

7·12 days agoEastern Catholic priests can marry, actually. There are married Catholic priests out there right now, and not because they converted in from Anglicanism after they married (though those exist, too), but fully cradle Catholics who were married before their vocation. Somehow this has not exploded the church or whatever. It is inconsistent and ridiculous.

4·12 days agoWow! She is almost identical to a cat I had many years ago named Buffy.
Any idea what breed this is? Buffy was a stray
A few weeks ago my boyfriend was chased across the parking lot of his apartment complex by a goose. He took refuge on a bench by the pond.
At which point the gator living in that pond started coming through the water in his direction. He stood up, ripples stop, gator stops. Sits back down, gator starts coming again. Stands up, it stops. Sits down, gator is a-comin’. He left at that point.
I am convinced the gator and the goose were in cahoots, and the goose was promised safety in exchange for a sacrifice

My thinking is basically that I am broke. I’ve got 400 or 500 to spend, and that’s coming out of student loans. If I get a budget windows at that price, even with the linux boost to it, I’m going to be kinda boned. That’s not a lot for a laptop. But the m1 air seems to be really holding up
