Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•Have you noticed how movies are getting longer?English
2·3 years agoCould’ve done without yet another train fight, and the chase sequences might’ve been cut down a bit
This is exactly how I felt - like the opening sequence was too long for what it contributed, and that the chase sequences could have been cut down. Sounds like we just disagree on the overall impact due to those aspects

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Intellectual Property should be abolished - change my mind!
1·3 years agoYeah look at how every single conversation about supporting small businesses went on reddit. Users would rage day and night about the ills of megacorporations. But if you got them talking about supporting small business they’d come out of the woodwork to tell you they’re not paying a higher price. And with things being as tight as they are right now, that’s a logical conclusion. But it just goes to show that even if you sit someone down and explain to them that X thing they say they support absolutely cannot compete with the price of Y thing they say they hate - they will still side with their pocketbook 9/10 times

1·3 years agoI don’t think you realize how incredibly short 10 years is in terms of investment recuperation. That’s not realistic unless you’re talking about abandoning capitalism all together, at which point the particulars of IP law are irrelevant

Lemmy@lemmy.ml•Is there a catch all Instance without defederation?English
31·3 years agoI don’t have an answer to your actual question other than self-hosting. But, I doubt you’d ever get a “firehose of trash” on your main feed. Mainly because the trashy instances aren’t that populous, so I doubt their posts would be active or hot enough to float to the top. But I could be wrong.
You could always go directly to the instance you want to read and lurk. Unless you make an account you won’t be able to comment, but you’ll be able to get your firehose of trash
Edit: Just be mindful of how much you consume, you’d be surprised how easily hate can invade your mind. To this day I still have to self-censor every now and then thanks to the hateful rhetoric I grew up around, even though I’m long past it

Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•Have you noticed how movies are getting longer?English
4·3 years agoThis is generally only applicable to peak content though
This is the main rub. A 3 hour movie that actually needs to be 3 hours can be great. I love all 3 Lord of the Rings movies. But as much as I wanted it to be really good, Dial of Destiny did not need its run time, nor did it use it to add substance

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it really a mass exodus? And is it really a mass exodus to lemmy?
3·3 years agoWhat’s also fun is the few times I’ve been back to reddit to look at something. Each time I ended up seeing people in the comments with just terrible attitudes. And I thought to myself, “I’m weirdly glad reddit is still around because it gives people like you a place to congregate that I can avoid.”

It’s pretty awesome! I’m only like a third through it but it’s so relatable already

22·3 years agoBut everyone was so much thinner back then. The average person was so much hotter.
Because they inherited an economy with actual food and replaced it with “food” filled with industrial inventions like corn syrup

81·3 years agoAbsolutely, there’s a long history of the “in-group” co-opting culture from the “out-group” because it’s seen as exotic and transgressive. Was it hypocritical for such a homophobic generation to idolize queer icons, only so long as they were cool and made good music? On a cultural level, yeah. On an individual level, depends on the individual and their specific beliefs and actions
Edit: Also my favorite Bowie album will always be Ziggy Stardust. Maybe a little basic but it just hits all the right campy, flamboyant, and always-incredible notes

Historically by both, the democrats just give out a couple treats now and then to make themselves look progressive
Edit: unless of course you’re using the actual definitions of left and right wing, but most people in this thread aren’t so forgive me if I’m mistaken
Economic liberalism is the economic theory of both American parties. Idk how it came to be applied to only the democratic party but that’s incorrect. OP is presumably critiquing economic liberalism from a leftist perspective, of which the Democrats are not

Some of us made our accounts on lemmy.world within a week(?) of its creation when it was tiny (June 5 for me). Doesn’t stop it from belonging on mildly infuriating
