It’s kind of dodgy selling something that you were given, without prior arrangement. Obviously it’s legal but that’s not what you’re asking, I think.

I recently gave someone a leftover, non-driveable car worth maybe $2K on the basis that he liked the car and he wanted to get it running and drive it. But to bypass potential awkwardness if the repair project didn’t work out, I explicitly told him that it was fine with me if he sold it and kept the money. That seemed like a good way to handle it.

I think the idea is that the info is probably true, but has high enough likelihood of being false that you better check anyway, if it’s something that matters. There’s a whole topic in machine learning called “probable approximate correctness” that tries to make that notion precise. Les Valiant’s book of a similar title introduced the concept and looks very good. I have it but haven’t read it yet.

I’m used to world and ml having about the same stuff, at least with regard to my own subscriptions. Ml actually has a few rederations like hexbear that are missing from world, and I read hexbear’s covid group.

DIY doesn’t necessarily mean your own network, but at minimum, all the privacy-protecting software (cryptography etc.) has to be running on hardware that you control and operate. As soon as someone else is running it for you, they become a point of failure and a place to pressure.

I don’t get email notifications, but that number next to the icon changing is annoying. I have a few old responses that I’ve left “unread” on purpose, so I’m reminded to get around to dealing with them (look at some url or whatever). When the number changes, that means there are actual new responses, which after a day or two tend to be useless depending on the topic. So I’d rather shut them off.

It might be to stop the damn notifications you keep getting whenever anyone posts to a thread you started. Also it’s reasonable to think discussion forums are in some sense ephemeral. If you want a persistent store of knowledge, try Wikipedia. Lemmy could also host wikis if it’s worthwhile, like reddit does.
