Technology@lemmy.world•Decimen Lets You Send Files Through Light, Not a NetworkEnglish
4·2 days agoI remember IrDA, I also remember it being frustratingly slow and unreliable.
Visible light data transfer isn’t new either. The Timex Datalink watches were using flashing coloured patterns on a PC monitor to send data to them in the 90s.
The off brand one I had didn’t even have the same colours, let alone on the right sides.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal - EVEnglish
21·6 days ago50k could be life changing for a lot of people. That could pay for a decent chunk of education/training, be used to start a business, or cover a deposit for a home. All major steps up for those currently struggling.
I fell off a step ladder as a teenager and physically was only badly bruised.
It has left me with a lifelong minor fear of ladders though.

3DPrinting@lemmy.world•Which 3d printer would you recommend?English
2·15 days agoWhat’s wrong with Elegoo? I don’t have their printers but I’ve used a fair bit of their filament which seems to be good value.
Considering an upgrade myself so wondering what to avoid.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Command & Conquer - Westwood's hit strategy game is coming to the Atari STEnglish
1·24 days agoThere is an Amiga port of C&C too, although it requires accelerator hardware.
Would be interesting to see how much of the game could be ported to a completely native system of the era.
A bridge along one of the major routes between England and Wales used a have toll for entering Wales, but it was free to leave.
It’s worked well for me so far. I chose Homarr because it has a GUI for dashboard creation, I wanted the whole family to be able to use it and they aren’t all up to editing YAML etc.
I use Homarr and initially created a really complex dash, but I’ve since whittled it down to just the bare essentials as a homepage.
Links to my most used web pages and self hosted services, and a couple of vital metrics that I would need to act upon quickly.
For everything else I have Grafana dashboards I can dip into as I need to.
I revived an old Kindle recently by jailbreaking and installing KOReader, and I’ve been reading more ever since.
I sold my DSLR kit this year because of this. It took fantastic pictures, but the effort of lugging all the gear around made it feel the purpose of each trip was to take pictures, not enjoy the trip itself.
Now I just use my phone. Photos may not be technically as good but they are still more than adequate and it’s just so much easier.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Vaultwarden while allowing family emergency accessEnglish
13·1 month agoA VPS is going to have all the same problems as a local server in terms of inexperienced users, and will also add all the extra hassle of managing and paying for the VPS account.
I would say the best options for emergency access are local backups and documentation, which you already have. You could also consider keeping additional copies of essential passwords (like email accounts etc) in a simpler vault like Keepass. Or even physical copies written down in a security envelope in a safe.

20·1 month agoIt’s called “disk destroyer” for a reason.
Always double check your dd commands folks.
Some old computer magazines in the 8 bit era occasionally distributed software on flexidiscs. They were also called Floppy ROMs.
The older games still hold up at least. I’ve been playing through Emerald again and it’s been a lot of fun.
There’s also quite a few good ROM hacks out there too.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•People who are staying on Plex, have you tried Jellyfin? What about it do you not prefer? (real question)English
4·3 months agoI hadn’t heard of Moonfin before, it looks promising as an Apple TV client. Any pitfalls with it?
I’ve got an X220 as my secondary laptop, currently running Debian. It’s had several mods/upgrades and it’s still a very useful machine.

Quite a few of the people I know and consider “normal” openly dislike AI.
I’m not sure it’s a majority opinion buts it’s not an obscure one.
