This is what I feel when I see a reddit link around here.

Every time I see a screenshot from there: “why are we giving them traffic for the screenshot?”

They had to go to reddit to get the screenshot. That is traffic. Not to mention all the people who see this post and the hop in over to leave a comment or read others.

Don’t give them traffic, don’t go there for the screenshot.

If you honestly think this isn’t giving them traffic, you’re ignorant or naive.

Maybe, but there’s also a more long-term force in the other direction. Bringing content from other platforms to Lemmy means that Lemmy has more content and people are less likely to go elsewhere to get their fill. If the best of Reddit is available on Lemmy, why bother going to Reddit? It’s the same thing as how Reddit used to have lots of Twitter screenshots on it back when Twitter was worth screenshotting. The people taking the screenshots likely use both anyway and wouldn’t stop if they weren’t allowed to post Reddit stuff here.

I’ve had that problem. But more often I have them correctly opening, but they start autoplaying muted by default. So I would have to frantically search for the unmute button or volume slider as fast as I can before I miss more than 2 or 3 sentences.

If it takes too long, then I probably didn’t wanna watch it anyway. I always hated it because it would throw banners at me advertising the app, which I expressly do not want. I had it downloaded one time for about 10 minutes on my last phone, and felt the ick immediately.

I don’t get them often, and typically only as discord channel messages. Lately they’re embedded so I don’t need to open them in a browser. It seems to be working now, but it was a mess for a while.

I think they’re intentionally blocking TikTok DNS records.

I do this for a number of sites so that the only way I can reach them is by intentionally turning on a VPN, bypassing my local DNS server (I self-host Pi.Hole), and visiting the blocked target.

Yep that’s right :) Intentionally blocked so I can never go there either accidentally or on purpose, and so any embeds or cross site tracking doesn’t work.

Same for Facebook, X, and a bunch of others, also using pihole the same as yourself.

Simply better for my wellbeing to cut some of this out of my life.

I didn’t know you could do that? I’ve been politely asking for a screen recording every time and just happily living with it and moving on if I hadn’t got one

yeah im about to hop off tiktok lol. every user that types a response is just dumber than the last. doesn’t matter the video topic. Some 30 year experienced chef cooking? sorry, Fatweeny69 knows more than that guy. car driving down the road? sorry. smoldickmas will type 4 paragraphs how something was wrong while driving. it’s getting so old lmao, and impossible to converse at all.

I stopped using it when it was briefly ‘banned’ then ‘saved by Trump™️’ and while I do think the platform has (had?) more merit than people give it, it only took a few days for my brain to reset, and now though I have picked it back up here and there, I always get quickly overwhelmed and put it back down. It’s nice that Loops and I guess Bluesky are trying to fill that gap, but I think it’s probably best they don’t succeed in copying the Tiktok algorithm. Though I learned and laughed a lot on the app, it was at the cost of having to sort any real information from multitudes of misinformation and a crap ton of my time wasted, and it left my dopamine receptors completely unable to motivate me to do anything else but watch short videos for a quick hit. I feel much better sticking to platforms like Lemmy and Mastodon that I enjoy but I could give or take. And like you said, the discourse is just abysmal.

I need to get a new source for memes. Using Reddit less and less and having access to meme sources would help the decline.

yeah… i really wish there was a FOSS alternative to reddit with tons of shitposting and quality memes, like how lemmy is a meme-filled FOSS alternative to… waitasecond.

Hahah I left myself open to that but I mean the volume and breadth of memes in Lemmy is vastly less than on Reddit. I try to contribute what I can where possible but it’s miles away at the moment.

E.g. I can get metal memes, formula 1 memes, dank memes etc in quite high volumes there.

I’d rather tiktok links than shitbook links. Most of my friends still suck the zuck nuts and refuse to leave, and share links instead of screen caps like a civilized person.
