The numbers are are probably scene numbers. Most of the ROMs floating around the internet come from various scene groups. Many older groups would number their ROM dumps (I assume in the order that they released them). Additionally, different groups often had different numbering systems. From what I understand it’s a practice that’s mostly fallen into disuse since it doesn’t really help.

The pre-installed stuff is also often configured in a way they leaves it with massive security holes.

The only immutable distro I’ve tried is Bazzite. It’s gaming-oriented, but can work well as a desktop. It also does offer a KDE edition, but for some reason they intentionally ship with some GNOME programs instead of the KDE ones. Also, DistroWatch’s search has the option to only show immutable distros. It’s under the Distribution Category option. I figure that might help you find a few more options.

By the way, if you find that one of your 3DS cartridges has become corrupted there’s still a chance to save it. There’s a homebrew application that can check for corruption and potentially fix the cartridge.

These days CRTs do still have the niche of being better for retro gaming. Modern televisions process the image and that adds frames of visual lag between when a button is pressed and when the action is displayed. Since many games require precise inputs this can make a significant difference in how well a game plays. There are ways to compensate for this with scalers (RetroTINK, OSSC, Morph 4K), but they aren’t cheap (like $400+) There’s also the fact that many newer televisions just don’t have compatible inputs for older consoles and cheap converters or adapters often add even more lag.
