More like, the app complains about not being able to find the window manager due to some environment variables missing in the shell env, and refuses to launch.

Alfred beats the pants off Spotlight as a launcher. Because of the custom actions, in particular.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Help me understand the workflow for cloning dotfiles after a fresh install without hosting dotfiles in the cloud
2·15 hours agoYou can use Syncthing to, aptly, sync the files between machines and always have the latest copy everywhere — including your phone, if you so wish. On a new machine, you would probably ssh to another one and copy the files before having Syncthing properly installed (if you have apps setup automated).
Inside the dotfiles, I typically have separate configs between the machines, because they differ enough to have to be adjusted. But for me, it’s just separate Ansible playbooks and tasks in a common directory, which I lug around from one machine to another.
This might come as a surprise, but the overwhelming majority of the executive branch aren’t elected neither in the US, nor in any European country. I’d like to see elections for hundreds of thousands of positions in the executive government in whatever country you’re in.
Ah yes, another US-centric post.
Things exist only theoretically if they’re outside the only real country, the US.

1·21 hours agodebating whether or not God exists is meaningless; If you simply live life as if God does exist, then there are no downsides. Just be someone who God would want in heaven
Not what Pascal’s wager is, afaik.
Jesus says many times that not believing in God is the ultimate sin. Thus, if you don’t sincerely believe that God exists, you’re fucked. Ergo, Pascal’s wager is believing that God exists regardless of your actual attitude toward religion.

1·21 hours agoYou know that Jesus allegedly has said many times that not believing in God is the sinnest of sins? Down to hell with you, then.

News@lemmy.world•Joe Rogan criticizes ICE tactics: 'Are we really going to be the Gestapo?'
1·1 day agoI’ve heard it many times that Rogan is a ‘neutral interviewer’. So I listened to his old episode with Chuck Palahniuk. The writer of transgressive literature Chuck Palahniuk mentioned that he participated in some kinda normie book reading club, and thought of bringing up his writing in there, but realized it would be unfit. Whereupon ‘neutral interviewer’ Rogan began insisting that this is censorship, and kept repeating that this is censorship and asking Palahniuk to admit that it’s censorship until the transgressive literature author Chuck Palahniuk said ‘okay, it’s censorship’ just to get ‘neutral interviewer’ Joe Rogan to shut up.
Yeah, I have audio compression permanently cranked up to the max in VLC.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where do you draw the line regarding windows?
1·2 days agoI have Windows 10 for games, but it’s firewalled so hard that it can’t check for updates or do any of its other shady stuff. I can’t even install components like WSL, because that works through svchost, the single executable doing too much.
I’m using Simplewall for that. The prohibitions for MS shenanigans are a couple checkboxes in the menu.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•MFW I wake up to find Lemmy feeds full of USA stuff
2·3 days agoWhy do I have to read ten reposts of everything happening in the US if it changes nothing and the comments are always the same? How is every little US thing ‘important’ to the rest of the world?
Let’s consult my feed:
Minneapolis hotel worker fired over ‘doxxing’ of ICE agents
Oh my God! Hotel worker fired in Minneapolis? What has the world come to? How will leaders of the countries respond to this issue?

xdg-openseems to do the same in Linux, since ‘xdg-utils’ oversee file associations.
