Technology@lemmy.world•China’s ‘artificial sun’ breaks nuclear fusion limit thought to be impossibleEnglish
1·5 days ago100% agree. I hope to be alive to see it. Popsci would have me believe it’s coming any day now.
I kind of get the no waste framing, since the nuance is too technical for most people to bother with. If we say anything more complex than three words about waste, then we will lose public support for fusion. It’s still not right, but I see a greater cause in that lie than the increase in clicks which is the driver for the lie that it’ll be ready tomorrow.

Technology@lemmy.world•China’s ‘artificial sun’ breaks nuclear fusion limit thought to be impossibleEnglish
1·5 days agoRecycling is definitely an important aspect of developing the technology to a maturity where it forms part of a power grid. But it’s not beyond the wit of man. If we can crack Q>5 for nuclear fusion, surely we can crack economically viable recycling for LLW. I don’t think it’s worth abandoning research on fusion over this issue.

1·5 days agoI understand there’s no waste with a half life >100 years, and the activated steel can be recycled a few decades after commissioning?

World News@lemmy.world•French judges alarmed by rumors of potential US sanctionsEnglish
5·8 days agoWeird, they’ve already sanctioned a French judge too, although I’m not sure how any of this relates to the original claim of “crickets”.

World News@lemmy.world•British voters want to be part of EU more than French and Italians, poll revealsEnglish
1·8 days agoWhat part of what I said entitles you to imply I would want more “enablists” in the EU? I am asking because if we’ve misunderstood each other that badly then we might need to calibrate a bit. For context: I’m a UK citizen, who wanted to remain despite having misgivings about the EU (from a leftist perspective, ie neoliberalism, the nature of NATO etc.) I still think we should rejoin ASAP even if it means a worse deal than we had.
I think the next election here is looking like it will be fought between Polanski and Farage. If we get Polanski (and I sincerely hope we do) then you will get your EU - friendly, socialist leader of Britain, for whatever that will be worth at that point. It’s still four years away and the situation at the moment is volatile internationally. I don’t expect there to be any meaningful change quickly enough to make a difference, probably. But it’s nice to hope.
The broad sweep looks like the current world order is shifting very quickly, and the genocide enabling of the people who were supposed to be the good guys is a big part of that. Unfortunately it looks like that’s just causing even worse guys to get hold of power.
I would agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong.

2·8 days agoMate, Bardella, Meloni, and the AfD are all right wing nuts. I’m sorry, putting the UK in the same bin as Hungary just because Farage lives here is nonsense.

6·16 days agoI get what you mean, and I agree, but xenophobia itself isn’t exactly a pretty gift left at the gates. It’s obviously wrong to be xenophobic, it shouldn’t be accepted. I think the tip of the spear might be a better metaphor.

World News@lemmy.world•Greta Thunberg arrested for pro-Palestinian protest under UK terrorism lawEnglish
3·17 days agoSo I don’t think the actions of a single individual acting on their own initiative during an action is sufficient to declare the whole group a terrorist organisation. The stated goals of the group do not include “injure or kill anyone who stands in our way, including police officers,” though the non-stated goals of that individual might.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Starlink VP confirms ‘dangerously close’ Chinese launch incident — close call saw satellite pass within 200 meters of Starlink travelling at over 17,400mphEnglish
51·1 month agoThis is a problem as well. As the satellites deorbit they vaporise, leaving aluminium oxide nanoparticles (and other metallic gases, volatiles etc) in the atmosphere, destroying ozone and building up over decades.
So it’s not just the light pollution, or the ruining of ground based astronomy. Or even the dangerous amount of clutter polluting LEO, making spaceflight even more risky. Starlink is bad news for the environment, but it’s to be expected since we’ve seen how carelessly spacex have destroyed the ecosystem in Texas.

U mad bro?
