No, you have an incredibly, ridiculously privileged rich-person life style that cannot apply to the vast majority of people. I don’t know why you think medical bankruptcy is the number one form of bankruptcy in the country and why over half of homeless people are disabled, but it’s not because most people can magically finance themselves out of the crippling reality of the economy.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Lemmy's political discourse when Republicans gutted the Voting Rights Act yesterday:
129·19 hours ago‘Feeding the hungry’ is an evil CIA plot when the US State department made them hungry.
And yes, as a brown person now in a 3rd world country (technically second world, but anything not white is third world to you people), I do care about the crimes the US does to the country I’ve been adopted into; including what USAID has done.
Pretending any thing the US has ever done has been done out of benevolence is, at best, pure willful ignorance. Ask someone in a country that has been affected by USAID why USAID was necessary sometime. Go on.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Lemmy's political discourse when Republicans gutted the Voting Rights Act yesterday:
1114·19 hours agoUSAID killed more brown kids in third world countries than most US programs. It was built by the CIA to destabilize countries and foment dissidence towards unfriendly governments (that usually aren’t able to provide for their citizens because of US sanctions anyway). Let’s not pretend it is bad for the world that this is gone; it is just amazing there are no longer any intelligent republicans that understand US foreign policy and allowed it to go away.
Both sides aren’t as similar anymore, as in Republicans literally stopped paying attention to the intelligence community and what they do to project US military imperialist power across the world and accidentally are helping the rest of the world break free from US imperialism; but ‘both sides’ want the exact same thing, ones just no longer intelligent enough to hide it behind doublespeak.
Seriously pretending USAID was a good thing is like pretending the NED promotes democracy or the US has ever been the victim in any conflict.
No, 55% of millennials own a home or have a mortgage. These are not the same thing, though they are counted the same by most statistics, especially those that want to pretend the economy hasn’t gotten progressively worse since 1968 which was around the peak of America’s golden age economy.
If you have a mortgage, you do not own your home. It can and will be taken away from you the second you are disabled or otherwise out of work. Over a fifth of chronically homeless Americans were ‘homeowners’ at one point during their lives. Until you have a paid off home you have no possible financial security. You’re infinitely better off than anyone renting, but you are not as good as a boomer who had their home paid off within five years of starting their mortgage.
If this were 'murica, just 2 two bedoom apartments. But it’d have to be uniformly distributed.

3·3 days agoTo me, the real tragedy is that a shared identity really could be forged between these two groups. In another world, I can imagine a beautiful fusion between the Israelis and Palestinians, like two trees growing around one another.
That existed before 1929.

64·3 days agoSupporting any Palestinian group in Germany in public will get you arrested. All Palestinian charities are banned due to links to ‘terrorism’ (aka the actual government of the gaza strip which any organization would have to work with in order to do things, you know, like how all states work.)
Just certain instances. There is no ‘one’ lemmy.’ which is the entire point of federated services (despite what .world admins think).
Most Lemmy instances are fine for most discussions of most things. .World is by far the most restrictive and most like reddit and other zionist-owned and ran services. Because it is owned and run by zionists. See !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com for wide ranging examples and reasons why .world is insane.
In general this is the only reason you need to pay attention to the instance you’re on. If you, as a .world user, frequently start posting anti-zionist rhetoric like ‘Maybe we shouldn’t kill children or use literal fucking rape-trained dogs on prisoners’ you might find yourself banned or shadow banned pretty quickly.
Just like if you’re too right-wing to understand why capitalism is bad, and you repeat neoliberal propaganda against socialism as a .ml user, you’d be banned.
The only really universal rules for commonly federated lemmy instances is no CSAM (ignore ani.social) and don’t send death threats/hate speech (unless you’re a .world admin and the target is palestinians, I cannot stress enough how much the entire lemmy.world admin team hates brown people native to the land of Palestine that are currently being genocided by the terrorist settler state of Israel and it’s dog the United States.)
It is but it takes the blame off of the platform entirely.
To word it a different way - if I made a service where no matter what you wanted to say I would write down your words, read them, and run through town shouting them until I found the person it was directed to and then shout it at them… I would be liable for the words being said as much as the person paying me to say it.
If, however, I have a strict policy where I will only do the above after I strictly review and moderate your words, and you managed to sneak in a tongue twister that says something dirty that I didn’t realize until after I shouted it… I am no longer liable. I did everything a reasonable person could expect, you are the only one liable.
When people sue in the US (and when companies really fuck up) people sue the person liable and all possible parties that could be included. The parties then shift blame around pretrial and try to prove they are not liable by xyz to get dismissed off the case. If this fails then each party sued essentially has a trial for their specific liability, which needs to be separately proved in court; and if it makes it that far, in front of a jury (or panel of judges, or a single judge, depending on which state and what kind of action).
However that’s not the point. The point is Companies, when brought into say, the Pennsylvania supreme court on Obscenity charges, can say they do everything technically possible to filter out these words, so we are not liable for whatever law – this usually makes prosecutors fail at trial, or reconsider bringing charges.
If you let anyone say the no no words, and someone sends a rape threat to Nancy Pelosi on your platform you could be liable for harassment, hosting obscenity (real charge in multiple US states), and other such financial annoyances.
So it is cheaper to just have a set of policies and procedures in place, even if it objectively makes your platform worse, even if it objectively is not effective, simply because it looks better in court and gets you out of more fines. See: The New Zealand law spurred on by the Christchurch shooter, which essentially requires every website to censor violent images and manifestos or pay some ridiculous $5mil NZD fine a DAY that it is kept up after being reported. If they can AI things breaking that law away, even if it harms other users, they’re going to do so.
Companies, like all parasites, will actively shy away from poisonous food sources and pick other directions to go in.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people speculating that the most recent Trump assassination attempt was fake?
310·4 days agoThere is no objective truth. If you learn nothing else about life, learn that.
There is what you believe the evidence points to being the most likely sequence of events. That’s it.
Is it likely that Trump was the trigger to end a 40 year streak of presidents not having assassination attempts? Really? You don’t think every Snaggletooth with a gun in BFE Alabama actively planned to shoot Obama and would have at least made the news in an attempt? Is it really likely that the single most expense set of secret police in world history – a group of organizations with NO PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY and a history of human rights abuses worse than any other group in known world history, have failed multiple times to stop random kids with guns that magically fire the wrong caliber bullets?
No. It’s not likely Americans magically grew a spine for Trump, who is just the average American President without an tact or competency for secrecy.
What is likely is the WWE Superstar, whose only goal in life has been to be in Hollywood, has a stage director and keeps trying to garner sympathy with these fake attempts.

Shitty Life Pro Tip@lemmy.world•Hotel has extra fees? Well then...
3·4 days agoOwners will eventually be hurt; they care about profit and profit alone. Any superfluous costs will eat into the profit. This method would generate extra work - costing money, which would fail to resolve the issue repeatedly - costing money, until finally a replacement is ordered - costing money, then the maintenance guy has to ignore whatever other task and install the new furniture - costing money.
If only 10% of hotel guests did this at just half the rooms they stayed in over a year we’d collapse the global tourism economy and permanently shut down most hotels across the world.

331·4 days agoNot on the majority of platforms nowadays. AI Moderation and content-aware automated filters before that ensure that the nasty people that say things like rape or shit or cum or Scunthorpe get censored, shadow banned, banned, then HWID/IP range banned in that order, in order to ensure the safety of everyone online.
Pity they can’t do anything about the CSAM, grooming, or nazis though.
