Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday that relinquishing playcalling duties to new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino couldn't have gone any smoother.
Never forget that, in 2007 after signing a new contract and promising the AD at Louisville that he wanted to be a Cardinal for life, Bobby Petrino promptly bolted to Atlanta to take the Falcons job. He then left the team 13 games into his only partial season with a 3-10 record. After looking Arthur Blank in the face, committing to being the Falcons coach, and denying that he was looking for another job, he left in the middle of the night without completing the season. He never addressed his players, only left a note on their lockers, and told the coaches that he’d resigned and would talk to them later (spoiler alert, he never did). He was announced as the coach at Arkansas at a midnight press conference, where he showed up on TV doing the hog call. While at Arkansas, he was fired for an inappropriate relationship/affair with a female trainer half his age. He hired her after they started having an affair, which is a large ethical violation. To add insult to injury - literally - it all came to light when he was in a motorcycle accident with the mistress on the back, which he tried to cover up by asking his security detail to lie for him. He looked the Arkansas AD squarely in the face and lied, telling the AD that he was alone on the bike. When the truth came out, he was fired from the Razorbacks.
Mike Zimmer was the defensive coordinator on that ‘07 Falcons team, and I think he put it best when he was interviewed in 2010: “Mike Zimmer on Bobby Petrino: ‘He’s a gutless bastard.’”
