    The “housekeeper” was an unmarried woman who lived in the same house as the priest, often for life, and if she got pregnant, the Catholic church would financially support the baby.

      At which point it’s strange and illogical to not allow them to marry. Priests of other denominations marry and I’m pretty sure most of them haven’t burst into flame.

        Some event recently inspired me to duckduckgo political system in Vatican. And Vatican is elective monarchy. And most often elective monarchies gradually become inheritable monarchies. But Vatican for some reason kept their status for millennials. :) So I believe political reasons are somewhere in this direction for priests and their fortune. However there are also some theological reasons for this decision in church.
