My dad was like this a lot when I was a kid. Generally, I appreciate it. But one time he kept pressing on fishing and I was not interested in killing animals or waking up at 5AM. I decided to give it a shot due to mild intrigue, and pushed myself to waste hours and hours driving in the dark, camping, getting all the fishing supplies ready, etc.

We finally get there, covered in bug bites, and we meet his friend that we came all that way to see. His family had been there an hour and each bought a bucket of fish, they were still biting like crazy. They were heading out, so my dad said “We’ll join you!” and we left to go chat with them for six hours instead of fishing.

He didn’t understand why I said no every time after that.

Do I even understand this correctly? You both spent hours getting to the fishing spot with fishing gear and then your dad just went “yeah, nah”?

Pretty much. I learned after the fact that he just wanted to hang out with his friend, and he didn’t care about fishing that day at all.

These Calvin and hobbes strips taught me it’s important for your lover to enjoy the same vacations as you. Turns out the wife likes camping too!
