People love using thinly veiled existing racist/homophobic slurs against AI. “Tinskin”, “wireback”, “cogsucker”, “clanker.”
Yes, I know that “clanker” was in Star Wars. That’s not what made it so popular, and the majority of people using it today likely never saw it there. People also use “clanka” and leave comments about using “the hard r.”
We all know what you’re talking about. You know when you’re typing it out. It’s not alright.
There are people places like Lemmy who spent their lives being called or watching their families be called the terms people are so lightly tossing about today. Do you really think that doesn’t bother any of them?
It seems like so many people were just eagerly waiting for something they felt it was socially acceptable to hurl slurs and abuse at, and happily reached for terms just like the ones they already knew.
Some kids at my niece’s school now think it’s cute to stare at black kids and talk loudly about how much they hate “clankas” making it very clear what they mean by it.
It’s one thing to dislike AI, how it’s been developed, and the intent of replacing human jobs. To insult AI and the people behind it.
It’s something completely different to jump in with constant streams of thinly veiled existing slurs that can and do hurt real people.

I absolutely agree. Too many are using it as a dog whistle, they say AI and mean black person.
Thank you.
It’s insane to try to talk about because you get responses like most of these. Even the mod in here replied saying AI isn’t conscious. As if that has anything to do with the topic or the problem. People saying me and my grandma must have thin skin and need to toughen up.
The rabid hate has really been shocking for a place that tries to look welcoming and accepting of others.
My concern isn’t that AI might get offended, it isn’t capable of getting offended. You cannot persecute an AI, because it isn’t even an Artificial Intelligence, it’s a glorified chatbot.
The problem is people are making fucked up jokes about black people while claiming it’s about AI. I saw a youtube short where a guy played a corrupt cop beating up AI, and the joke was that he was treating AI the way cops treat black people, only we’re meant to be on the side of the cop.
But why? That behavior is wrong and clearly black-coded… The video even called the robot things like “Rosa Sparks” and “George Droid”
If we were just insulting inanimate chat bots that’d be one thing, but we’re making it so close to being racial that if you squint it suddenly becomes about black people. Which is the point, because this is racism with a flimsy justification.
Yeah. “Clanker lover” has a very clear mirror term. And pointing out how extremely sketchy and not alright these things are gets you drown in hate by people who get angry and defensive at the thought of giving up their shiny ‘new’ slurs. Which is terrifying in itself.
Nothing has made me feel like I warped back 80 years ago than seeing how angry people get when told their slurs are hurting real people. People in this post told me I’m thin skinned, and said the same about my 90 year old grandmother. That’s not a sane response. I thought it wasn’t. Decades of ‘allies’ then the second you tell someone a slur impacts you and ask them to rethink it that gets burned.
