I’m not worried, and you can’t make me.
Raspberry pis are a tragic waste of Sam’s RAM.
Just get an esp32 or mini PC at this point.
NUCs and other mini PCs are better (for the most part) anyway. Many have msata or nvme support, replaceable and expandable memory, better cooling, more powerful CPUs, and some have the ability to add in PCIe cards. Some even allow for CPU replacement/upgrades.
For lower power stuff, esp32s are where it’s at.
I’m not sure what the usefulness of using a raspberry pi is, anymore. If you have something that you don’t want to suck power, ESP32s have you covered and will always use less power than a rpi. If you need a bit more performance, a mini PC will almost always outperform a rpi.
With memory prices I think a lattepanda is a better choice than a pi if you want a cheap PC
There are plenty of other chipsets that are lower in power consumption than ESP32. Raspberry Pi does provide the Pico 1 and Pico 2 for embedded stuff which is mostly great. Don’t know if they fixed the errata 9 on the Pico 2 yet with the leaking GPIO thingy.
STM32, AVR based stuff, PIC, ESP32, Pico’s. We got a lot of fun stuff to tinker with.
This is true, yeah. I’m referring to the “normal” rpis, though. The ones that are the most affected by the price increase. I struggle to understand the usecase for those.
It is that many are familiar with them, they have good support, fairly extendible and great community.
Also used in commercial solutions for those exact reasons.
There is cheaper and better hardware but the RPi has a bit of a goldilocks position.
Which have also gone up in price.
That said, the Pi was only really worth it at toy prices. By the time you added a reliable power supply and case, even they were pushing £100.
They have but the other components don’t cost much in comparison. You are pretty much buying memory and it happens to have a completed system attached.
Pi zero is still pretty cheap though. 512MB of memory should help keep that affordable.
Yeah, the whole point was that it was like $35 and small.
That’s what we should be worried about? Not the billionaire pedophile authoritarian rapist threatening to nuke Iran because an election isn’t going his way?
Edit: ok, so, here’s my deal. Yes you can be worried about multiple things. But fear is meant for things that are life threatening. None of your anxiety is wrong, just in my mind this is much more of a frustrating thing rather than worrisome.

Must be nice only being able to worry about one thing at a time

It doesn’t say you shouldn’t be worried about anything else.
That, too.
Nice whataboutism.
They were already too goddamn expensive anyway.
I was priced out of the hobby when I finally had the space and time to start getting into it. This just confirms it will stay out of my reach.
If you mean Raspberry Pi specifically, it’s extremely overpriced and there are way better alternatives for a much better price. Orange Pi is the first that comes to mind due to naming, but there are also many more.
If you mean hardware overall, look into the used market. Older systems are perfectly fine for hobbyist/home server applications, you can find/build a cheap computer that will serve you well. From someone who is utterly broke - this is very much still possible.
What truly sucks is gaming, LLMs and other hardware-demanding applications. There you do need fancy hardware, and it will cost you a kidney or two. This is where things get very grim.
16gb model went from $305 to $385. Smaller increases for other models. Thanks Altman.
Holy shit what?? Those are actual prices. That’s insane, last time i got one it was like 80 euros for the 16GB version, which was already expensive for what it was.
Same, bought one last summer for 80,- Insane to see this kind of price increase
have used a chinese made bananapi as a router. paid like 100-120 for it. they are currently 400. it’s not just raspberries this is happening to.
Where has this author been since the AI boom? We’ve been worried since crypto has been gobbling up and pricing out GPUs
Stop telling me to be worried for fucks sake
Shush! I will worry about what ever I want when ever I want, you don’t need to tell me.
