In advance of today’s games, I thought I would share my own FBS poll. Feel free to chime in with your own rankings in this thread! If there’s enough interest, maybe we can eventually create our own poll system for this community.

First, I should state this is purely a computer poll. (I’m not intentionally disrespecting any teams!) Think of it more like a power rating. Secondly, it is the pre-season so it’s kind of a shot in the dark. I definitely could adjust things (e.g. Alabama & Oregon State are too low; Louisville & Maryland seem strangely high) but then bias can creep in. I’ve been doing my own rankings for 5 years, making slight tweaks to the algorithm along the way, but had to overhaul it recently in the transfer portal era so there may still be kinks to be ironed out.

Without further ado:

And may I reiterate: this is the pre-season! Things will shake out by the end of the season (for example, it probably won’t keep 3 PAC schools in the top 5 once that conference cannibalizes itself). Here’s how last season ended in my poll:

    1. Clemson

Computer confirmed not an Ohio State fan. Also not a coward by putting Alabama at 24.

I always enjoy people’s computer polls and graphs/charts. I’m hoping we get more people over here to post content like this!

My poll has always places Alabama fairly low because they lose so much production to the NFL every year. I’ve yet to figure out how to account for Nick Saban being a crazy outlier of a coach. But this year it initially had Bama at 60-something so I had to shift the weight to rely more on last season’s final standings.
