This is in response to activity by Beep@lemmus.org, who’s actively, knowingly breaking the rules of the community (there’s a limit of two posts per day, yet I count ten from them in the last 24 hours; this is a pattern) and on top of that being a nuisance – intentionally erasing the credit from comic artists’ works before posting them to the disdain of the community’s readers. The latter isn’t against the rules, but there’s an obvious consensus from the community that it should be (I would poll them, but they already polled themselves to overwhelming support), and Beep taunts them and continues to flood the community in the absence of moderation.

The current sole moderator, lawrence@lemmy.world, last commented a month and a half ago, and they don’t seem to be actively moderating or responding to user reports. I’d try reaching out to them, but Beep has been doing this for a while now, and it doesn’t seem like “wait and see” is going to fix anything. If I’m made a moderator and lawrence objects with plans to actively moderate, I’ll unquestioningly demoderate myself. Moreover, I won’t delete posts created before I was moderating which break the rules against post limits so I don’t nuke dozens of posts where people have already had discussions.

I already moderate two active communities, and I recognize this is a pretty strong measure, so I debated for a while before asking.

Thanks.

Hello, we’ll try to reach out to the current community mod first. This will likely take a few days if we don’t hear back from them. Meanwhile, beep has been warned to stop posting more than allowed by the community rules.

Just like to draw your attention back to this topic as underpantsweevil beep has now spooled up multiple alts (both under beep, boop, and keep nicknames) to avoid their lemmus ban, and has continued the same behavior as before.

Edit: I see that the moderation on the community was updated hours ago, so its been resolved for the moment.

The mod tools on Lemmy… aren’t great. There is a moderation queue for reported posts/comments. If a mod account isn’t on the same instance of their moderated community, they do not see the mod queue. If something isn’t reported, it is hard for mods to see unless they are genuinely active in the community.

Most moderators hang out in a matrix chat to discuss things.

I do tend to lurk in the community, i usually try to read every comment simply because I like to see what people have to say. I’d probably do alright if they need the help.

he is an active member of the community and doesn’t already moderate as many communities as e.g. TheTechnician. while I was waiting for a response from lawrence until today, another member of our team, unaware of this post, had independently looked into finding a new mod, and about half a day before i’d gotten around to it, appointed him. this resulted in a bit of an unfortunate timing, but overall I expect dohpaz to be able to take care of this community and also build up a suitable mod team, possibly with the people who posted/commented here.
