MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company is belching smog-forming pollution into an area of South Memphis that already leads the state in emergency department visits for asthma.
None of the 35 methane gas turbines that help power xAI’s massive supercomputer is equipped with pollution controls typically required by federal rules.

No, I really think most people don’t know that. I just had this conversation with someone yesterday, they were raving about how AI will change everything eventually, and I was trying to explain to them there isn’t enough energy in the world to do the things he wants AI to do.
He honestly thought AI didn’t use any more power than a normal Google search.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if entire communities also didn’t know what they were signing up for.

Why is it gas powered?!? That doesn’t make any sense
My understanding is that they’ve loaded the datacenter with far more than the local utility can provide power for. So they’re reportedly running a number of generators 24/7 to provide enough electricity.
